You should be able to:
•• Ethernet
•• Wi-Fi
•• TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)
•• UDP (User Datagram Protocol)
•• IP (Internet Protocol)
•• HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
•• HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure)
•• FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
•• email protocols:
•• SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
•• IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
A set of agreed rules that are used for communication across a network.
Ethernet is the rules applied to PHYSICAL parts of a network.
The most common physical rule is the "Ethernet Cable". The Ethernet protocol states that the cable must be twisted pair copper cable.
A Wi-Fi protocol is the rules for a wireless LAN or W-LAN. Wireless devices must meet the standard in order to connect.
Internet Protocol
The rules for sending data packets across a network and the Internet. The data packets are sent using an address called an IP address.
Transmission Control Protocol
Often linked with the Internet Protocol and referred to as TCP/IP, TCP creates the link between the two hosts where data sharing is taking place. TCP makes sure that the connection and data exchange takes places and reconnects if there is an error.
User Datagram Protocol
This is another protocol that can be used to connect hosts but it doesn't do the error checking that TCP does so it make it faster but less reliable.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol
This is the set of rules used for connecting a web page from a server to a client.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure
This is a set of rules used for SECURELY connecting a web page from a server to a client.
File Transfer Protocol
FTP is a protocol for sending files across a network.
SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
SMTP is for sending emails from the mail server directly to the clients computer. The email is then removed from the server and remains on the clients computer.
IMAP - Internet Message Access Protocol
IMAP sends a copy of an email to the client but the email remains on the server. An example of this would be GMAIL or YAHOO mail.
